AI detection – imperfect software that helps you “Lean In” and find the really cute tiger cubs of AI

“Lean In” is a familiar term made popular by Sheryl Sandberg and her book of the same title.  As I’ve thought about AI detection and its many imperfections the idea of leaning in has resonated with me.

Geoffrey Hinton recently described AI as “a really cute tiger cub” that you hope won’t kill you when it grows up.  I appreciate the description and although I don’t entirely agree with his sentiment, I do respect his depth of understanding and perspective.  I think his 10-20% risk factor of AI taking control away from humans is worth noting.

My company has just released a Chrome Extension for AI detection.  AI Truth Teller™ helps users identify artificial intelligence, and although a bit limited in its current form, new features are coming soon and part of its backbone is Generative AI, meaning it will learn quickly.

I already find it to be quite useful. It includes a mechanism for user feedback and is available now for anyone that wants to download, install and use the software.  Admittedly it’s a long way from the full feature set we imagine.

By some definitions we have released an Alpha Version of software although we think of it as Beta ware.  The application is stable, is no longer being tested exclusively by internal staff and we don’t expect to find any major bugs as usage increases.

In the recent CBS interview, Hinton is surprised at the amount of progress that has happened with AI within the last ten years.  This is scary to some and exhilarating for others.  I tend to lean more towards the optimistic side.  However, as generative AI continues its torrid pace in learning and imitating the behaviors of real people, I believe it will be increasingly important to assess, detect and even to know if you are interacting with artificial intelligence or a real person. Knowledge is power and knowing when, where and how you interact with AI is a critical step in protecting and maintaining human control and decision making.

AI is a fast learner and there are significant hurdles to overcome to keep pace.  How and when the difficult interactions show up, is a bit of a guess, but for now, we’ve started down the long road of AI detection and I hope you will join us.

AI Truth Teller™, available now as a free Chrome Extension.  Take a look and let me know how it works for you.
