How much influence does AI have on my decisions?
AI, individual choice and human-in-the-loop processes are becoming deeply entwined in some of life’s most vexing circumstances…
As I read and ponder headlines
I am often brought to the stark reality
That human choice, accountability and AI are deeply entwined
What do I do when my child is bullied at school?
How do I respond if my doctor says I have a life threatening disease?
Do I really need to do what Trump or AOC tell me to do?
Am I coward or a traitor if I don’t agree with my closest friends?
Where can I find great advice and is AI my only option for an honest conversation?
Artificial intelligence is intrusive by design
It’s in my browser, computer, watch, phone and maybe my toilet
And yet, I am human. AI is not.
I have a conscience and by design the ability to choose
I can choose good or evil, anger or patience, kindness or harm
I am responsible and accountable for my choices and decisions
I have a soul. AI does not.
Some will say I am a product of my surroundings and circumstances
Other will say I am child of God
And Viktor Frankl…well, he makes a compelling case that human choice is divine
If I ask AI, “when is the busiest time at the Student Union building at the University?”
How will AI know if the user is looking to take some lives;
Or is a Campus Security Officer or FBI Agent looking to defend student lives?
As I said, Human-in-the-Loop processes and AI have become deeply entwined,
With some of life’s most vexing circumstances
We all need emotional and mental resilience
We all need good judgment.
And as humans, we need to make good decisions in difficult circumstances
This much I know about AI and what it does - I will not allow AI to choose for me
